New patients

What should you expect on your first visit?

Our examination procedures are geared toward detection and correction of the “Vertebral Subluxation.” The procedures we use are specifically selected for your spine and nervous system health.

The exam is a thorough spinal and nervous system exam that includes palpation — checking your spine by hand to feel areas that may be involved in subluxation. Spinal position, curvatures and muscle tone are also examined.

It may also include specialized equipment. First, reading spinal heat differences from one level of the spine to another — heat is a byproduct of circulation, which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Second, scans of surface electrical impulses along your spine, which show the effect of subluxation on the motor nerve system and your muscles. These give a baseline so we can accurately measure your progress — much more accurate than depending on “how you feel” on any given day.

Spinal X-rays may be taken depending on your age and situation (not, for example, during pregnancy, for most children, or with recent usable X-rays). Most patients receive three spinal X-rays at the beginning of care.

Your Report of Findings is scheduled within a few days of your first visit. It is your most important visit and may take up to one hour. That is where you receive your care plan and any special instructions for the best and fastest results.

We use the most modern chiropractic analytical and adjustive procedures and equipment available. We feel you’re worth it!

What is a subluxation, and what does it do to me?

In simplest terms, a subluxation (a.k.a. vertebral subluxation) is when one or more of the bones of your spine move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate, spinal nerves — the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. That irritation causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over them.

Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If the signals are interfered with, some part of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not function at 100% of its innate ability.

It is the responsibility of the Doctor of Chiropractic to locate subluxations and reduce or correct them, through a series of chiropractic adjustments designed for your spine. Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of training to be experts at correcting them.

Chiropractors often call this the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, or VSC, because several changes happen at once — in the bones (osseous component), the nerves (nerve component), the muscles (muscle component) and more.

Animal chiropractic

Care for dogs, cats and horses

Dr. Bruce is certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. He adjusts dogs and cats at the owner’s home and travels to the barn for horses, serving all of New England. He will also be adjusting animals at Boston Veterinary Clinic.

What is animal chiropractic?

Your animal has the ability to heal and regulate itself, coordinated by the brain and nervous system. If interference exists within the nervous system, your animal’s health will suffer. The most common interference is the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, or VSC.

Symptoms usually appear later. In a horse: tender back muscles, difficulty collecting, cinch sensitivity, head throwing, lameness, pinning ears, abnormal sweat pattern or gait rhythm. In a dog: sensitivity to touch, trouble with stairs or getting up, changes in walking and running, “puppy sitting,” on-and-off lameness, tail held to one side, or changes in eating habits.

Chiropractic care is not a substitute for vet care but integrative with your primary vet, and Dr. Bruce will consult your vet. No restraints are needed — all care is by hand, and most animals feel relief immediately. Care is far less frequent than for humans.

Horse & rider chiropractic

The biomechanics of the equine and human spine are similar, and a rider’s spine can affect a horse’s spinal function and vice versa — hindering performance and health. Symptoms are the last thing to appear and the first to disappear, even though the problem exists. Animal chiropractic addresses the cause.

Evaluations take into account saddle fit, gait pattern and rider alignment. Adjustments are gentle by hand, with no restraints and no sedation — the handler just holds the lead line. Periodic wellness evaluations help head off damage from VSC. Care is coordinated with your vet.
